Being a lady incorporates much more than just appearance. Although, appearance is important the key to being a lady is how a woman carries herself in public. The mind must be changed in order to change a woman’s behavior to be more lady-like. Thus, if the behavior changes so will the appearance. Not to be confused with giving up independence and being helpless, being a lady is basically being an intelligent woman with class.
- Confidence- Not to be mistaken for vanity. Confidence is when a person is sure of herself. Sometimes people confuse arrogance for confidence. These two qualities are very different. Confidence is rooted in positivity whereas arrogance stems from negativity and insecurity.
- selflessness- It’s not all about me! Helping others is a quality that is often ignored by contemporary advice. But it is still a virtue that gives a person character and sets them apart from the mainstream.
- Integrity- being the same person both in public and behind closed doors. People appreciate others who are consistent with their behavior rather than being “wishy-washy”
- Grace- When I think of grace I think of the women of the 40’s and 50’s. Like Jaqueline Kennedy, Coretta Scott King, and Lena Horne etc. This is just being a pleasant person.

Coco Chanel, a fashion icon, revolutionized the lady like style of the 20th century which has continued in to today’s fashion https://www.flickr.com/photos/69017136@N04/16925778001 Knowing how to command respect rather than demand it. Holding eye contact when communicating with people, crossing your legs and having straight posture are someways to practice being graceful.
- articulate- being able to articulate means more than just knowing big words. Rather its the art of being able to get your point across without using many words. In order to act like a lady, curse words must not be a part of your vocabulary. A lady must always use proper grammar and pronunciation as well. Just think of the scene in My Fair Lady when Eliza is practicing proper pronunciation of certain words.
- Manners- Yes, ma’am; no, ma’am; excuse me. Pretty much the Golden Rule on this one.
- Decent attire/hygiene- This is really important! Proper attire and hygiene means dressing yourself appropriately for the occasion and ensuring you rid yourself of any body odor. If you are going to a formal that means do not wear a short dress with a low neckline, showing all “your girls” as my mother would say. Also, perfume is a great addition to an outfit. Chloe and Chanel No5 are two of my favorite lady like perfumes. Remember to iron your clothes and comb your hair when you are going to be around people especially going to work. When shopping buy more things that are classic rather than trendy. This makes your wardrobe more versatile. Learning the art of accessorizing can customize any outfit. Also, knowing what works well for your body type can help with how you look. Some outfits fit differently on different body types. i.e printed patterns vs. solid colors, “A” line skirts vs pencil skirts. As the old saying goes, “Things should be done decent and in order.” How you dress/take care of yourself is a direct reflection of your self-esteem.
- Tactfulness- Being able to say no without being mean. This means being able to tell the truth. This parallels with #5
- Smile- the universal language; make sure to take care your smile as well. This parallels with #7 #Brush/floss and carry mints in your purse
- Exercise/maintaining good health- Eat your veggies and drink plenty of water. Having a healthy lifestyle affects the mind, body and soul. Research proves that eating healthy along with plenty of exercise decreases stress which is directly linked to wrinkles and aging. So if you want to stay looking young just go take a walk outside.
With good practice of these tips any woman can be turned into a classic lady.
